Day 18 – I’m Listening, God

“Okay, God, I’m listening—my Connection Challenge exercise for the day.” I strode up the street, but only heard birds chirping.

Maybe I should ask questions and then listen.

“Lord, what do you think I should be doing?” I paused to listen, which felt both odd and refreshing.

The evangelism challenge at church came to mind, along with a name and a face. My chest tightened. That was the third time this week that person had come to mind when I thought of the evangelism challenge.

“But God, it would be way too awkward to talk to her about Jesus.”

My pastor’s words echoed in my head. “Many Christians don’t talk about Jesus because it’s uncomfortable, because they’re chicken.” Yes, it was true.

“I really do care about her. All right, if this is something you want me to do, please provide the opportunity and the words to say.” With that, I relaxed again and walked on.

Do I dare ask another question? Do I really want to know the answer?

question mark

I guess I do.

As I continued walking down the block, I ran a couple of activities I’m involved in and a decision I need to make by God. No answers came to mind when I paused, but again it felt good to ask.

“What about my writing, God? That story call-out email today from Chicken Soup looked like something I could easily do, but I don’t think I should put off the project I started last fall any longer. No, I should just dig in and get that project done.”

Faint glimmers of another story I had written popped into my head. Could it be I already had a story that I could spiff up and send in to Chicken Soup?

Fanned book

No, the story I remembered was just a couple paragraphs I included in another piece. Or was it?

Oh yeah, I did write a short story at a conference last summer that I could possibly use. I’d forgotten about it. “Thank you, Lord.”

It felt so good, so right, so freeing to ask for God’s opinions and listen for his answers instead of plowing ahead like I frequently do. I’m definitely going to do more of this from now on.

Below is tomorrow’s “Connection Challenge” exercise:

Premise: To receive God’s power and peace in my life, I need to be connected to Jesus (John 15:4-5).

Guidelines: For 21 days, my only goal will be to connect with Jesus throughout each day. I can also do any other activity if I can do it with Jesus.

Connection Aid: Day 19, Friday January 24: Listen to Christian Music

Like Psalm 95:2 says, I want to come to God with thanksgiving and sing him songs of praise. To help me do that, I will figure out a good way to listen to Christian music in my house by either compiling a selection of songs I like on a CD or electronic device, or finding a customized service like Pandora.
